Dearness Allowance (DA) is a cost of living adjustment allowance paid to employees in India, primarily in the public sector. It helps employees manage inflationary pressures on their purchasing power. DA is a component of the salary aimed at buffering the impact of inflation. It is linked to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and is revised periodically to offset inflation's effects.

The Dearness Allowance is calculated as a percentage of the basic salary and is taxable. To calculate DA, one must first understand the two components it consists of: Basic Pay and the applicable DA rate. The formula to calculate DA is:

\[ DA = \left( \frac{AICPI - BaseIndex}{BaseIndex} \right) \times 100 \]


where AICPI is the All-India Consumer Price Index. For instance, if the AICPI is 350 and the Base Index is 261.42 (for the year 2001, which is often used as a base), the calculation of DA is:

\[ DA = \left( \frac{350 - 261.42}{261.42} \right) \times 100 = 33.83\% \]

This percentage is applied to the basic salary to derive the amount paid as DA. For an employee with a basic salary of ₹40,000, the DA would be:

\[ DA = 33.83\% \times 40,000 = ₹13,532 \]

In addition to being crucial for current employees, Dearness Allowance also impacts pensioners since it affects the Pension, Dearness Relief (DR), and associated costs.

While DA plays a vital role in safeguarding against inflation, it is important for employees to remain updated on DA rates issued by the government or relevant authorities since these adjustments will significantly impact overall take-home salaries. This component has a direct correlation with changes in the Consumer Price Index, and any fluctuations in CPI will subsequently mirror changes in DA.
